"The response so far has been very positive," Cureton said. "We're continuing to accept resumes, and we encourage people to do so -- soon."

Sheriff's officers themselves are pleased.

"We could use more manpower," one said. "We provide a lot of services and assist the towns whenever they call."

Applicants must be currently employed as a sworn officer in a New Jersey Civil Service law enforcement agency for at least two years after graduating from a state PTC-certified police academy.

They must also have a New Jersey Police Training Commission certificate.

“Eligible officers from the BCSO are afforded the opportunity to be members of the Court Security Unit, Special Services Unit, Patrol Unit, K-9 Unit, Crime Scene Unit, Warrant Squad, Regional SWAT Team, Bomb Squad, Regional Crisis Negotiation Team, Training Unit, Community Outreach Unit and other specialized units,” Cureton said.

Those interested in applying should send a letter of interest and resume directly to Cureton at the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, Two Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack, NJ 07601.
